Every Time I Learn It, It Changes

Three times. You have learned the same thing three times.

The first time took a while and you got there. Then one day it was somewhere else and it looked different, and you learned it again.

Then it moved again.

And after the third time something in you closed. Not dramatically. You did not decide anything. Something simply stopped putting effort into that kind of learning, because effort that gets wiped out three times stops being worth spending.

That is not defeat. That is a sensible man responding to evidence.

Here is what I want to say before anything else, because you may not have heard it put this way.

You did not fail three times. You succeeded three times.

Three separate occasions of learning a thing and being able to do it. Every one of those was a success, and the thing that ended each one was not you.

Somebody moved it. In an office, for reasons of their own, without telling anybody, and they will do it again, and it has nothing whatever to do with the man at the kitchen table.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever

There is a sentence about something that does not move, and its position in the letter is worth knowing.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (Hebrews 13:8, King James Version)

The same. Three times over. Yesterday, today, and forever.

And it sits in a chapter full of practical instruction to people whose lives were being disrupted constantly, in a letter written to a community that had lost most of what it had relied on.

You are holding on to one thing that is the same yesterday and today, and nothing else on this earth has ever once been offered on those terms. Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that solid for a man who has watched things move three times.

Notice what the verse does not claim. It does not say that everything will hold still.

It names one thing that does, and by naming one it quietly admits that the rest does not, which is the most honest thing anybody has said to you about this.

You have been told the truth about what moves and what does not, and no verse anywhere has ever once promised that a person's circumstances would hold still. The Holy Spirit is the one who names the one fixed thing without pretending about the rest, and it is written that the sameness belongs to a person rather than to an arrangement.

And notice the word forever at the end. It is not there for decoration.

It means that this one thing will still be true after the next three moves, and the three after that, and after everything that a man will ever have to learn again.

You were never going to outlive the one thing that does not move, and no number of changes has ever once reached the end of that sentence. The Spirit of God is the one who holds still while everything else is rearranged, and Scripture puts the forever at the end where it covers whatever comes next.

What actually happened three times

Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not reopen something that has closed.

Take the three occasions and look at them as a record.

Occasion one: a man learned a thing he did not know. Success. Occasion two: the same man learned a rearranged version. Success. Occasion three: the same again. Success.

That is a record of three successes and zero failures, and it has been filed as evidence that learning is pointless.

You are holding a record of three successes filed as a defeat, and no completed learning has ever once been undone by somebody moving the thing afterward. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a record correctly when it has been filed wrong, and Hebrews 13:8 names the one thing that stays put and leaves the rest honest.

And here is the second half, which nobody has told you.

The moving is not aimed at anybody, and it is not a sign that anybody is behind. It happens because people in offices are paid to change things, and they change them whether or not anybody wanted them changed.

You have never once watched anybody else relearn a thing, and no man's constant relearning has ever been visible to the people standing around him. Hebrews 13:8 names the one thing that stays put and stays honest about the rest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man what everybody else's week actually looks like.

The young man who helps you relearns constantly and does not experience it as learning at all, because it never once occurred to him that there was something to have finished.

That is the difference. Not speed. Whether a person believes there was a finishing line. That is a gap in the teaching and it is not a gap in you.

You have been measuring yourself against a finishing line that has never once existed anywhere, and no relearning has ever been a sign that anybody fell behind. The written word names one fixed thing and does not pretend about the others, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man what everybody else is actually doing.

Count them out loud

Now the small thing, and it is a count and a name.

I am not going to suggest you learn it a fourth time. That may happen and it may not, and today is not for that.

Say out loud how many times the same thing has been learned, and say who moved it.

You are able to count your own successes out loud, and saying a number has never once been boasting in anybody's kitchen. Hebrews 13:8 puts the sameness on a person rather than on an arrangement, and the Holy Spirit is the one present when a man reads his own record back properly.

Say the number first. Three. Or four, if it is four.

Then say the second half, which is the one that does the work. Say who moved it. Somebody in an office moved it.

Both out loud, at a normal volume, on your own.

Because the number on its own sounds like a complaint. The number with the mover named beside it is a completely different sentence, and it puts a thing back on the shoulder it belongs to.

You are naming a number and a mover in the same breath, and no count has ever once been a complaint when the cause was named beside it. The Spirit of God is the one who returns a weight to where it actually belongs, and it is written that the one who does not change is a person rather than a system.
