Something turned around in this house and nobody said when.
For about thirty years, you were the one explaining. The car, the money, the man at the door, the thing that had gone wrong upstairs. People came to you. That was the arrangement and everybody understood it without ever discussing it.
And now, more often than not, things get explained to you.
Slowly. Kindly. With a small pause first while somebody works out how much to say.
Nobody announced this. There was no evening where it was decided. It happened over about four years, one small occasion at a time, and by the time you noticed it, it was already the way things were.
And here is the thing that has been hardest to say, even to yourself.
You are not upset about the explaining. You are upset about the position.
That is a different grief and a bigger one, and it does not have a name in most families, and there is nowhere to put it.

Now also when I am old and grayheaded
There is a prayer that names an age and a fear in the same breath, and does not tidy either one.
Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. (Psalm 71:18, King James Version)
Read what he asks for, because it is not comfort. It is not rest and it is not being looked after.
He asks to be kept until he has shown something to the next generation. He is asking for time to keep giving.
You are not forsaken now that you are old and grayheaded, and no man in that psalm has ever once asked to be looked after instead of used. Psalm 71:18 says forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hears what a man is actually asking for.
Notice the word shewed. Shown. He is not asking to be consulted or included. He is asking to be the one showing.
That is the position he is praying to keep, and the psalm treats it as an entirely reasonable request from an old man.
You have been grieving a position rather than a task, and no request to keep showing something has ever once been vanity in anybody. The Holy Spirit is the one who names what a man is actually missing, and it is written that the asking is for the showing rather than for the being included.
And notice the reach of it. Unto this generation, and to every one that is to come.
He is not asking to be useful for another year. He is asking for a place in the line that runs past him into people not born yet.
You were never asking for something small, and no man has ever once been out of order for wanting a place in a line that runs past him. The Spirit of God is the one who honors a request that reaches beyond a lifetime, and Scripture puts every one that is to come at the end of the sentence.
What actually changed
Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not restore a position.
Name what turned and what did not. What turned is one narrow category. Screens, and the arrangements that sit behind them, which arrived in the last twenty years and which the younger people in that house grew up inside.
That is the whole of it. That is the entire territory that changed hands.
What did not turn is everything else. Whether a person can be trusted. What a thing is actually worth. When to speak and when to wait. What a marriage needs in its fourth difficult year. How to stand in a room where something has gone wrong.
You are holding everything except one narrow strip, and no single category has ever once been the whole of what a man knows. The Spirit of God is the one who counts what has actually changed hands, and Psalm 71:18 has an old man asking to go on showing rather than to be handed something.
And here is the part that has never been said in that kitchen. Nobody stopped asking you about the other things because they decided you were finished.
They stopped asking because nobody in a family ever asks about those things directly. They come up sideways, in a car, at a table, when something has happened. And nothing has happened for a while.
That is a gap in how families talk and it is not a gap in you.
You have been read as finished when nobody in that house ever thought it, and no silence about the large things has ever once been a verdict about a man. The written word has the old man asking to keep showing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a father from misreading his own kitchen.
Tell them one thing
Now the small thing, and it reverses the direction for four minutes.
I am not going to suggest a conversation about how the house has changed. That would be an occasion and everybody would hate it, and it would not restore anything.
Tell one person in your house one thing they do not know, and take your time over it.
You are able to be the one showing something for four minutes, and one thing told well has never once been an imposition on anybody in a family. Psalm 71:18 has a man asking for time to show rather than to be shown, and the Holy Spirit is the one present when the direction turns around in a kitchen.
Choose something real. Not a story they have heard. Something you actually know that they actually do not.
Why a thing was built the way it was. What happened in this town in a particular year. What a man does when somebody at work is lying and cannot be confronted. How to tell what a thing is worth by picking it up.
And take your time. Do not rush it and do not apologize for its length. The taking of time is half the point, because the position you are missing is not the information, it is being the one the room waits for.
You are the one the room is waiting for while you tell it, and taking four unhurried minutes has never once been a burden on people who love you. The Spirit of God is the one who restores a direction rather than a fact, and it is written that the showing runs to a generation and then to the ones after it.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has lost a position in his own house.
You are not forsaken now that you are old and grayheaded, and no change in who explains what has ever once changed a man's place in his own house. I am not telling you nothing has moved, because something has moved and pretending otherwise would be no use to you at all. Psalm 71:18 says forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who hears what a man is actually asking for.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have been holding everything except one narrow strip, and no single category has ever once been the whole of what a man carries. The Spirit of God is the one who counts what has actually changed hands, and the written word has an old man asking for time to keep showing rather than for somewhere comfortable to sit.
One thing. Told slowly. Without being asked.
Declare this over yourself
- Pause before somebody answers me, you are four years of a change nobody announced, and you were never a decision anybody in this house made. Psalm 71:18 says forsake me not until I have shewed thy strength, so by the Holy Spirit I tell one person one thing today, in the name of Jesus.
- Grief about a position I have lost, you have never once been ingratitude and you have no right to stay unnamed in my own kitchen. The written word has an old man asking to go on showing, and by the Spirit of God I take four minutes and I do not hurry.
- Father, You let a grayheaded man ask for time to show Your strength to the ones coming after him. Your word makes that a reasonable request rather than a proud one, so by Your Spirit I say one thing slowly and I do not wait to be asked.
