I Hand It To Somebody Else To Press

You hold it out and somebody takes it.

It has become smooth. You do not even ask anymore. The thing needs doing, and your hand goes out across the table, and whoever is nearest takes it and does it and gives it back, and the whole transaction costs about eleven seconds.

Eleven seconds, and everybody is pleased. They were glad to help. You were glad it got done. Nobody said anything unkind, nobody sighed, and there is genuinely nothing wrong with the picture from the outside.

And yet something has started bothering you about it, and you have not been able to say what.

Let me try to say it for you, and if I get it wrong, keep the part that is right.

It is not that you cannot do it. Some of it you could do. It is that the handing over has stopped being about the task. It has become the thing you do when a screen is involved, whether you could manage it or not, and somewhere in the last two years the reaching out of your hand became automatic.

And an automatic thing is not a choice anymore. That is the part that is bothering you.

What is that in thine hand

There is a question God asks a man who is busy explaining why he is not the right person, and it is four words long.

And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. (Exodus 4:2, King James Version)

Moses has been listing his disqualifications. He is not eloquent. They will not believe him. He is the wrong man, he has been the wrong man for forty years, and he has the whole speech ready.

And God does not answer the speech. God asks him what he is holding.

You have something in your hand right now, and heaven has never once opened that conversation by asking a person to list what they cannot do. Exodus 4:2 has God asking about the object rather than the ability, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person's attention from the speech to the hand.

Notice what the rod actually was. It was nothing special. It was the ordinary working tool of a man's ordinary job, the thing he had held every day for decades without thinking about it once.

And it stayed a rod. It did not become a different object. What changed was who was holding it and what was done with it.

You are holding an ordinary thing that has never once needed to become extraordinary before it could be used by the person it belongs to. The Holy Spirit is the one who dignifies the plain object in a plain hand, and it is written that God asked what is that in thine hand rather than what have you been trained for.

And there is one more thing in it, which is that God asks. He does not take it. He does not reach across and lift it out of Moses' grip and demonstrate.

He asks what is there, and then He gives instructions, and the man keeps holding it the whole way through.

You were never meant to be relieved of the thing in order to be helped with it, and being shown has never once required a person to let go first. The Spirit of God is the one who teaches with a person's own hands still on the object, and Scripture keeps the rod in Moses' hand from the first word to the last.

What the passing actually costs

Now let me be concrete, because there is a real cost here and naming it wrongly would be useless to you.

The cost is not the task. The task got done, correctly, in eleven seconds, and that is a good outcome by any measure.

The cost is that nobody watched it happen. One hand was empty and the eyes went somewhere else and the whole thing occurred out of sight, and so the next time it needs doing, nothing has moved.

That is not a failing of memory. Nothing was ever available to remember. It is a gap in the teaching, and a gap in the teaching is not a gap in a mind.

You are not forgetting things you were shown, and a task done out of your sight has never once been a lesson that a person could have kept. The Spirit of God is the one who separates what somebody was not given from what somebody could not hold, and it is written that Moses kept the rod through the whole of the instruction.

And there is a second cost, which is quieter and larger. Every automatic handover teaches the room something. It teaches the people at that table what to expect, and it teaches you what to expect of yourself, and after two years of it there is a settled arrangement that nobody ever agreed to out loud.

Nobody in that house ever decided you would stop pressing things. It just became true on its own.

You have been living inside an arrangement nobody proposed, and a habit that formed by itself has never once had the authority of a decision. The written word puts the question directly to the person holding the thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reopens what a household has quietly settled.

Keep hold of it once

Now the small thing, and it is deliberately small.

I am not going to tell you to stop asking for help. Asking for help is right, and this whole site would say so on every page. What I am talking about is a specific reflex, and reflexes only change one instance at a time.

So pick one thing. The smallest one. The thing that goes across the table that could almost certainly be managed alone.

And this time, keep hold of it. Ask them to say it to you rather than do it for you, and do it yourself with the thing still in your hands.

You are able to keep hold of something while somebody tells you what to do with it, and being told has never once been less help than being rescued. Exodus 4:2 keeps the rod in the man's hand through every instruction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a woman at a table doing something small and hard.

And you will need a sentence for it, because the reflex is faster than the intention and the other person's hand is already coming out.

Here it is. Do not take it, just tell me. That is the whole sentence. Six words, and it is not rude, and anybody who loves you will do it gladly.

You are asking for a better kind of help and not for less of it, and six words across a table have never once been an unkindness to anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who puts a sentence in a person's mouth at the moment their hand is already moving, and Scripture shows a man taught with his own tool still in his grip.
