The Passwords2 Corinthians 3:3

My Notebook Is A Mess Of Crossings Out

This message is for the woman with a small book full of scratched out lines and arrows she can no longer follow, who is ashamed of the book itself rather than of anything she has actually done wrong

There is a small book, and you would not want anybody to see it.

That is the honest sentence, and it is worth saying first because it is the actual problem. Not the book. The not wanting anybody to see it.

Inside it there are lines crossed out. Some of them crossed out twice. There are arrows going from one page to another that made sense at the time. There is one entry with three versions and you cannot tell which one is current. There is a page from about four years ago in different handwriting, because that was the year your hand was bad.

And you keep it in the same place, and you know exactly where it is, and it is the only reason you can get into anything at all.

So it works. It is doing the job. And you are ashamed of it.

Let me name what the shame is actually about, because it is not about security and it is not about tidiness.

It is about what that book would say about you if somebody picked it up. It looks like disorder. It looks like somebody not coping. And you have spent a lifetime being a person who copes.

I want to look at that book differently for a few minutes, because I think it says almost the opposite of what you have been reading in it.

My Notebook Is A Mess Of Crossings Out

Written not with ink

There is a verse about where the real record is kept, and the contrast in it is between paper and something else.

Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. (2 Corinthians 3:3, King James Version)

Written not with ink. The comparison is deliberate, and it is between two kinds of record.

One kind smudges, gets crossed out, gets lost, and has arrows in it. The other kind is written by the Spirit of the living God on a person, and it does not.

You are written on in a place that no page has ever been able to hold, and no smudged record has ever once been the account that matters about a person. 2 Corinthians 3:3 says written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is named in the verse as the one doing the writing.

Notice what the verse says the people themselves are. The epistle of Christ. The letter. Not the ones carrying the letter. The letter itself.

Whatever a person is holding in a drawer, the actual document is the person.

You have never once been the paperwork, and no notebook in a drawer has ever been the letter that God is actually reading. The Holy Spirit is the one who wrote what is written on a person, and it is written that the tables are fleshy rather than made of stone.

And there is the phrase not in tables of stone, which is doing real work. Stone is the tidy option. Stone is permanent, orderly, and impressive to look at.

And the verse says the better record is the one written on something living, which is by nature messier and warmer and harder to display.

You were never asked to keep the tidy kind of record, and God has never once preferred the impressive tablet to the living one. The Spirit of God is the one who writes on people rather than on stone, and Scripture sets the messy living thing above the orderly one on purpose.

What that book actually shows

Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not make a woman want anybody to see her notebook.

Look at the crossings out as evidence rather than as a verdict.

Every crossed out line is a time something changed and a woman kept up with it. Every arrow is a connection she noticed and recorded. The three versions of one entry are three occasions when a thing was reset and she did not give up on it.

That is not a record of failure. It is a work log. It is the visible trace of somebody who has been managing a genuinely difficult thing for years without once being taught how.

You are holding a work log rather than a confession, and a page full of corrections has never once been the same thing as a page full of mistakes. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a person's own evidence correctly when they have misread it, and 2 Corinthians 3:3 puts the true record somewhere no page reaches.

And here is the part nobody ever told you. Nobody was ever taught how to keep track of these things. There is no lesson. There was never a class, a leaflet, or an afternoon where somebody sat anybody down.

Every single person is improvising. Some of them improvise on paper, some in their heads, some on the backs of envelopes. That is a gap in the teaching, and it is not a gap in you.

You have been improvising something nobody was ever taught, and no method invented alone has ever once been a mark against the person who invented it. The written word puts the writing in the Spirit's own hand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who honors what somebody built with no instructions at all.

One clean page

Now the small thing, and it is not a reorganization.

I am not going to suggest you copy the whole book out. That is a large job, it would take an evening you do not owe anybody, and starting it and not finishing it would leave you worse off than before.

Open the book, find one line you can still read clearly, and copy it onto a clean page.

You are able to make one clean line on one clean page, and copying out a single entry has never once been a burden on anybody's afternoon. 2 Corinthians 3:3 has the real record written by the Spirit rather than by anybody's hand, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman and a pen at a kitchen table.

One line. Not the most important one. One you can read.

And leave the old book exactly where it is. Nothing is being replaced today and nothing is being thrown away. The old book has been doing its job and it goes on doing it.

Because the point of the clean page is not tidiness. It is that a woman who has been ashamed of a book gets to write one line she is not ashamed of, and finds out that the shame was never in the ink.

You are writing one line you can look at without flinching, and one clean entry has never once been an accusation against everything before it. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a small ordinary act of dignity, and it is written that the living record was always the one that counted.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has kept a book in a tin for nine years and shown it to nobody.

You are written on in a place no page can hold, and no book full of crossings out has ever once been a record of anybody's failure. I am not telling you to reorganize anything, because the thing works and there is no virtue in tidiness for its own sake. 2 Corinthians 3:3 says written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lets a woman read her own handwriting properly.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have been reading a work log as a confession, and every crossing out in that book has never once been anything except proof that somebody kept up. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a life's evidence accurately, and the written word sets the living record above the tidy one on purpose.

One line. One clean page. Leave the rest.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Book in the tin, you are nine years of a woman keeping up, and you were never a confession of anything. 2 Corinthians 3:3 says written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, so by the Holy Spirit I copy one line onto a clean page today, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame about the crossings out, you have never once read that book correctly and you have no right to keep a tin shut. The written word sets the living record above the tidy one, and by the Spirit of God I read my own handwriting as evidence.
  3. Father, You write on people rather than on stone, and Your word says the fleshy tables are the better ones. Your word makes me the letter rather than the paperwork, so by Your Spirit I write one clean line and I leave the rest where it is.
