He Said He Was Calling From Somewhere Official

He said where he was calling from and something in you sat up straight.

Not fear exactly. Something older than fear and more automatic. The feeling a man gets when an official voice says his name, and his whole body arranges itself into being cooperative before his mind has caught up.

And then he asked you things, and you answered them, and the answering felt compulsory.

And afterward, when you put the phone down and stood in the hall, you could not work out what had happened. You are not a timid man. You have argued with plenty of people in your life. And yet for eleven minutes you had been unable to do the simplest thing available, which was to say, I am going to hang up now.

I want to talk about that, because it is not about being gullible and it has almost nothing to do with what was said.

It is about authority, and about what your generation was taught to do in the presence of it, and about the fact that nobody has ever told you that you are allowed to put the phone down on somebody who claims one.

We ought to obey God rather than men

There is a moment where men are told to stop by people with genuine authority, and their answer is one short sentence.

Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. (Acts 5:29, King James Version)

Notice who they were talking to. Not impostors. The actual council. Men with real standing, real robes, and a real right to summon them.

The authority was not fake. And the answer was still no.

You are permitted to decline a real authority when a higher one is in the room, and no office anybody holds has ever once been the last word over a man. Acts 5:29 says we ought to obey God rather than men, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that available to somebody standing in a hall with a phone in his hand.

Now notice how short the answer is. One sentence. No speech, no argument, no attempt to persuade anybody of anything.

They did not debate the council's credentials. They did not ask for proof. They simply said what they were going to do.

You have been given a very short answer to a very large voice, and no refusal has ever once needed a speech attached to it. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man's answer short when a room expects a long one, and it is written that they said the whole of it in a single line.

And there is one more thing worth having, which is that they were wrong-footed and outnumbered when they said it. This is not a scene of confident men in comfortable circumstances.

They were tired, in trouble, and standing in front of people who could do things to them.

You were never required to feel confident in order to say a short sentence, and no man in that account has ever once been described as at ease when he said it. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies a line to somebody who is not feeling brave, and Scripture puts the answer in the mouths of men who were in real difficulty.

What that voice was actually doing

Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not get a man through the next call.

A claimed office does one thing and it does it very well. It reverses who is entitled to ask questions.

In an ordinary call, both people can ask things. The moment somebody says where they are calling from, that arrangement flips. Now one person asks and the other answers, and asking a question back begins to feel like obstruction.

That is not a failing in you. It is the whole point of the sentence, and it works on everybody, including people who are much younger and much less polite than you.

You are dealing with something that flips who is allowed to ask, and no reversal like that has ever once been evidence about the man it worked on. The Spirit of God is the one who names what was actually done in that eleven minutes, and Acts 5:29 has ordinary men answering an office with one line.

And here is the fact nobody has ever told you, and it is the only one you need. Any genuine office is content to be called back.

Every one of them. Without exception. A real one expects it, has a process for it, and will not be even slightly put out. Only one kind of caller objects to being called back, and that tells you everything without your having to judge anything at all.

That is a gap in the teaching and it is not a gap in you. Nobody says this out loud to anybody.

You have one fact that answers every call of that kind, and no genuine office has ever once minded being telephoned back. The written word has men declining a real authority in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands a man a fact instead of a suspicion.

Practice the sentence

Now the small thing, and it is one sentence said in advance.

I am not going to give you a way of telling a real one from a false one on the spot. That would be a judgment made under pressure, which is exactly the condition where nobody judges well, and this site will not hand anybody that job.

Say out loud, I am going to hang up now and check, and practice it once today while your house is quiet.

You are able to say eight words out loud in an empty hall, and one sentence practiced in advance has never once had to be invented under pressure. Acts 5:29 has a one line answer given by men who were not comfortable, and the Holy Spirit is the one present while a man rehearses something small and important.

Say it now. Out loud. In the room. It will feel ridiculous and that is the correct feeling.

Because the reason you could not say it in the moment is not courage. It is that the sentence did not exist yet. There was nothing to reach for, so your mouth stayed shut and your body stayed cooperative.

A sentence that has been said once out loud in a quiet hall is a sentence that is available on the bad afternoon. That is the only reason for practicing it.

You are putting eight words somewhere your body can reach them, and one rehearsed sentence has never once needed to be brave to be spoken. The Spirit of God is the one who arranges a man's answers before he needs them, and it is written that the short reply belonged to men who were outnumbered when they gave it.
