Eleven months ago you lost something to a message, and nobody knows.
Not your wife. Not your brother. Not the man you have coffee with every Thursday and have told everything else to for twenty years.
You dealt with the practical part alone, whatever there was of it. You made the calls. You did what could be done. And then you closed it, and you have not opened it since.
Here is what I want to say first, and it is not about the money or the thing.
The losing took an afternoon. The silence has taken eleven months, and it is still going, and it is charging you every single week.
Because a thing nobody knows about does not sit still. It comes up when a subject gets near it. It makes you change the direction of a conversation. It makes you slightly false with people you love, and you can feel the falseness, and the falseness is worse than the thing itself.
And every week that passes makes it harder, because now you would also have to explain why you did not say anything for eleven months.
That is the mechanism. It is not shame about being caught. It is a debt that grows the longer it goes unpaid, and you have been paying interest on it since last October.

When I kept silence, my bones waxed old
There is a psalm about the physical cost of not saying something, and it is more blunt than most people expect.
When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. (Psalm 32:3, King James Version)
Bones waxed old. That is a body being described. Not a mood.
And roaring all the day long, which is a strange phrase, and what it means is that the silence was not silent on the inside. Outwardly nothing. Inwardly a noise that never stopped.
You are carrying something that has been making a noise in you all day for eleven months, and no silence a man keeps has ever once been quiet on the inside. Psalm 32:3 says when I kept silence, my bones waxed old, and the Holy Spirit is the one who names an exhaustion that a man has not been able to account for.
Notice what the psalm says next, in the verses that follow, and notice what it does not say. It does not say he was forgiven when he improved.
It says he spoke, and it was dealt with, and the speaking and the dealing happened in the same breath.
You have never once been waiting for a condition to be met, and no man in that psalm has ever been asked to fix anything before he opened his mouth. The Holy Spirit is the one who puts the speaking and the answering side by side, and it is written that the acknowledging came first and everything else followed it.
And one more thing about the psalm, which is who wrote it. It is a king. A man with a reputation, a position, and a great deal to lose by admitting anything.
He wrote it down and had it sung in public.
You were never the first man with something to protect who found the protecting cost more than the telling, and no reputation has ever once been worth eleven months of bones. The Spirit of God is the one who made a king's confession into a public song, and Scripture puts it in the book to be sung by everybody.
What the silence is actually costing
Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not open a man's mouth.
Count what the silence is buying. It is buying the belief, in a few people's minds, that this did not happen to you.
That is the whole of what it protects. Nothing else is protected.
Now count what it costs. Eleven months of managing a subject in conversation. The falseness with your brother. The tiredness you have not been able to explain. And every month, a growing second thing to confess, which is the silence itself.
You are giving up a great deal every week for a very small protection, and no reputation held in place by silence has ever once been worth the maintenance on it. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a ledger honestly, and Psalm 32:3 puts the cost of keeping quiet directly into a man's bones.
And here is the part that has never been said to you. This happens to everybody. Not to the careless. To everybody, including people who are careful and clever and much younger than you.
The whole business is built by people who study exactly how a person's attention works, and they are extremely good at it, and there is no version of being sensible that makes somebody permanently immune.
Nobody ever told you that, and that is a gap in the teaching rather than a gap in you.
You have never once been in a category by yourself, and being caught by something built by professionals has never been the same as being foolish. The written word puts the confession in the mouth of a king and sets it to music, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man what is actually true about everybody else.
Four sentences, to one person
Now the small thing, and it is four sentences said to one person.
I am not going to suggest you tell everybody, or make an announcement, or bring it up at a family gathering. None of that is needed and all of it would be far too much.
Say it out loud to one person. Four sentences.
You are able to say four sentences to one person, and one account has never once obliged the person hearing it to do anything at all. Psalm 32:3 names the cost of keeping it in, and the Holy Spirit is the one present when a man finally says it.
Here is the shape. Something happened last October. I got a message and I acted on it and I lost something. I dealt with it at the time. I have not told anybody until now.
That is the whole of it. Four sentences and then stop.
And do not explain how it happened. That is the important part. Do not walk them through it, do not describe how convincing it was, do not build the case for why anybody would have fallen for it.
Because the explaining is a defense, and a defense implies a charge, and there is no charge. Four flat sentences leave nothing to defend.
You are stating a fact rather than defending a case, and four plain sentences have never once required anybody to argue for themselves. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the defense out of a man's mouth, and it is written that the acknowledging was enough and nothing further was demanded.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has been carrying something alone since last October.
You are able to open your mouth about it, and no silence a man keeps has ever once been the price of keeping his own dignity. I am not telling you the loss did not matter, because it did, and I am not going to talk you out of that. Psalm 32:3 says when I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes eleven months off a man's back.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have been giving up something every week for a very small protection, and no belief held in a few people's minds has ever once been worth what the keeping of it costs. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a man's ledger honestly, and the written word puts a king's own confession into a song that everybody sang.
Four sentences. One person. No explaining.
Declare this over yourself
- Message that came last October, you are one afternoon and you were never a verdict on the man who read you. Psalm 32:3 says when I kept silence, my bones waxed old, so by the Holy Spirit I say four sentences out loud to one person, in the name of Jesus.
- Silence I have kept since the autumn, you have never once bought me anything worth the price and you have no right to another month. The written word puts a king's own confession into a public song, and by the Spirit of God I open my mouth and I do not explain.
- Father, You put the acknowledging and the answering in the same breath and asked for nothing to be fixed first. Your word never once made me wait until I was better, so by Your Spirit I tell one person the plain thing this week.
