The name was there and everything else stopped.
You did not weigh it. You did not read the rest of it properly. Something in you went straight past every ordinary caution you have ever had, because the name at the top of it belongs to somebody you would walk into traffic for.
Four minutes. That is roughly how long you were gone.
You are back now. It got sorted out, one way or another, and he is fine, and it was not him.
And what you have been carrying since is not fear of the message. It is a question about yourself.
You want to know how you could be that easy to move. You have been a sensible woman for seventy years. And a name on a screen took four minutes off you and you could not get your feet under you the whole time.
I want to answer that properly, because it has an answer, and because you have not had one and have been filling the gap with something unkind about yourself.

They know not the voice of strangers
There is a passage about sheep and shepherds, and the thing the sheep are said to know is very specific.
And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. (John 10:5, King James Version)
The voice. Not the name. Not the words. The voice.
That is the recognition being described, and it is the kind of knowing that lives below reasoning. A sheep does not analyze anything. It hears, and it knows, or it does not.
You are somebody who knows a voice she has heard for twenty years, and no name written on a screen has ever once been the same thing as a voice. John 10:5 says they know not the voice of strangers, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distinction plain for a woman who has been blaming herself for four minutes.
Now hold that against what happened. What arrived was a name. A written thing. No voice at all.
And a name is exactly the part that anybody can copy. The voice is the part that cannot.
You have a way of knowing that nothing on a screen has ever once been able to imitate, and no printed name has ever carried the thing you actually recognize him by. The Holy Spirit is the one who guards what cannot be forged, and it is written that the knowing is of the voice rather than of the name.
And there is one more thing in the passage worth having. The sheep are not described as clever. Nothing in the chapter praises their judgment.
What they have is familiarity, built up over time, and that is presented as sufficient.
You were never asked to be clever about this, and no amount of years spent loving somebody has ever once been the wrong kind of preparation. The Spirit of God is the one who puts familiarity where analysis was expected, and Scripture never once asks the sheep to reason about anything.
What actually happened in four minutes
Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance would be an insult to a woman still asking herself a hard question.
Here is the honest account. Love is not a slow system. It is not supposed to be. When a name you love appears with any suggestion of trouble attached, everything else in a person shuts down and the whole machine turns toward that one thing.
That is not a defect. That is what love does, and it is the reason a grandmother is the one that boy rings when something goes wrong.
The same thing that made those four minutes possible is the thing that makes you worth having.
You are built to move fast toward somebody you love, and no love has ever once been designed to weigh things carefully first. The Spirit of God is the one who honors the mechanism rather than mocking it, and John 10:5 puts the knowing in familiarity rather than in caution.
And here is the second half, and it is the part nobody has told you. What was used was not a weakness. It was the strongest thing you have.
Nobody targets a person's indifference. There is nothing to work with there. The name was used precisely because it is attached to the deepest thing in you, and that is a fact about the message and not a fact about your judgment.
That is a gap in the teaching, and it is not a gap in you.
You have had your strongest thing used against you, and no love has ever once become a fault because somebody found a way to aim at it. The written word puts the safety in knowing a voice, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman what was actually done to her.
Say what he sounds like
Now the small thing, and it is not about screens at all.
I am not going to give you signs to look for. That would leave you examining every message from your own family for the rest of your life, and I am not going to do that to a grandmother.
Say out loud one thing you know about how he actually talks to you.
You are able to say one true thing about somebody you love, and knowing how a person speaks has never once been something a stranger could get hold of. John 10:5 puts the recognizing in the voice, and the Holy Spirit is the one present while a woman says out loud what she knows.
Say something specific. The word he always uses. The thing he says first. The way he never asks for anything without three sentences of something else in front of it.
There are six of these in any grandmother, known for years and never once said out loud.
And they are the real defense, because they are the part that cannot be copied by anybody who has not sat in a kitchen with him.
You are naming the thing nobody outside your family has ever heard, and a voice known over twenty years has never once been available to a stranger. The Spirit of God is the one who brings to mind what a woman already knows, and it is written that the stranger's voice is the one that is not known.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been asking herself a hard question since Thursday.
You are a woman who knows the voice she loves, and no name printed on a screen has ever once been the same thing as a voice. I am not telling you the four minutes were nothing, because they were four real minutes and you have every right to want an account of them. John 10:5 says a stranger will they not follow, for they know not the voice of strangers, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who hands a woman back what she already had.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have had the deepest thing in you aimed at, and no love has ever once become a weakness because somebody worked out how to point at it. The Spirit of God is the one who honors what a woman is made of rather than grading her for it, and the written word puts the knowing in familiarity rather than in caution.
One thing about how he talks. Out loud.
Declare this over yourself
- Name that came up on that screen, you are letters on glass and you were never his voice. John 10:5 says they know not the voice of strangers, so by the Holy Spirit I say out loud how my grandson actually talks to me, in the name of Jesus.
- Question I keep asking about myself, you have never once had an honest answer in you and you have no right to sit in my chest. The written word puts the knowing in the voice, and by the Spirit of God I stop grading myself for loving that boy quickly.
- Father, You made the recognizing a matter of a voice and never of a name. Your word says the stranger is the one whose voice is not known, so by Your Spirit I name what I have known about him for twenty years.
