My Son Sighs And I Have Stopped Asking

It is not a big sound.

It is a breath out. Sometimes it comes with a small pause first, or a hand going to the back of the neck, or the eyes going somewhere else for half a second before they come back to you.

And then he helps. Every time. He has never once refused you anything.

So there is nothing to complain about, and that is exactly why you have never said a word.

What you did instead was quieter. You stopped asking. Not all at once. First it was the small things, which you decided you could work out alone. Then it was anything that might take more than a minute. Then, at some point you could not name, it became a general policy, and now there are four or five things in your week that you go around rather than ask about.

Nobody in that family knows this has happened. He thinks you are managing. You are managing, in a way, and the way is costing you more than anybody has counted.

I want to say something about that sound before anything else, because I think you have been reading it as being about you.

Bear ye one another's burdens

There is an instruction about who carries what, and it is written to ordinary people about ordinary weight.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2, King James Version)

Bear ye. It is a command, given to everybody, in both directions.

And it takes as given that people have burdens. There is no suggestion anywhere in the sentence that a well-organized person would not have one.

You are somebody whose weight was always meant to be carried by somebody, and having a burden has never once been a failure of arrangement in anybody. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that ordinary for a woman who has quietly stopped handing hers over.

Notice what carrying somebody's burden is called at the end of the verse. The law of Christ. Not a favor. Not a kindness. Not an inconvenience willingly borne.

The whole law, summed up, is people carrying each other. That is what the sentence claims, and it is a very large claim about a very small activity.

You have been standing in the middle of the law of Christ every time you asked, and no request has ever once been outside what God arranged people for. The Holy Spirit is the one who dignifies an ordinary favor into obedience, and it is written that the bearing fulfills the law rather than interrupting anybody's day.

And it is worth reading the verse in both directions, because you have spent decades on the other side of it. You carried. For years, for many people, without counting.

The instruction does not have a clause that exempts people who have already done their share from ever receiving.

You were never disqualified from the receiving end by how much you carried, and no amount of carrying has ever once used up a person's right to be carried. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps the traffic moving both ways, and Scripture puts the command in the plural without any account of who has done more.

What the sigh is actually about

Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not get you through the next doorway.

Consider what is actually in that breath. Almost always, it is not about the person asking. It is a man arriving in a moment he was not ready for, with something else still running in his head.

It is the sound of someone changing tracks. It is the sound tiredness makes when it is interrupted. And it happens to him with his wife, his colleagues and the man at the door, and he does not know he makes it.

You are hearing a man change tracks, and a breath let out in a doorway has never once been a verdict on the person standing in it. The Spirit of God is the one who reads a sound accurately when it has been misheard for years, and Galatians 6:2 puts the carrying at the center rather than the manner of it.

And here is the part nobody has ever told you. He does not know he does it.

If he were told, he would be genuinely upset, and then he would want to fix it in the fastest possible way, and he would be gentler for about three weeks and then it would come back, because it is not a decision. It is a body doing what a tired body does.

That is why the answer here is not a conversation about the sigh. A conversation about the sigh would cost you both something and change very little.

You have never once been in the presence of unwillingness, and a body's automatic sound has never been the same thing as a man's answer. The written word commands the carrying without one word about how gracefully it must be done, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a mother from misreading a son.

Ask a different way

Now the small thing, and it changes the doorway rather than the man.

I am not going to suggest you tell him how the sound lands. You may want that conversation one day and it may be a good one, and it is not what this week needs.

Ask him one thing this week by message instead of in the doorway.

You are able to change where the asking happens, and choosing a better moment has never once been the same thing as hiding from anybody. Galatians 6:2 puts the burden bearing at the center of the law, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a woman starts asking again after months of not.

The reason is exact, and it is not about avoiding his face. A message arrives when he is ready for it. He reads it in a gap, answers it when he has room, and there is no moment of arriving unready, so there is no changing of tracks, so there is no breath.

The sound was never his answer. It was the doorway.

You are taking the doorway out of it rather than taking anything away from him, and a question that arrives in somebody's own time has never once cost anybody a thing. The Spirit of God is the one who finds the practical way through where a conversation would have cost more, and it is written that people are made to carry for one another.

And no apology in front of it, and no five thank yous afterward. One thank you. Five turns a favor into a debt, and the debt is what has been closing this down.
