She takes it, she does it, she gives it back.
Four seconds. Sometimes three. She does not look up while she does it, and she is still talking to somebody else at the same time, and the whole thing costs her nothing at all.
And it is fixed. That is the thing. It genuinely is fixed, and she was glad to do it, and she would do it again tomorrow and mean it.
I want to be careful here, because this is not going to be a piece about a daughter behaving badly. She is not behaving badly. She is being kind, quickly, in the only way anybody has ever shown her.
The trouble is somewhere else entirely, and it took you a while to find it.
The trouble is that the same thing has now been fixed for you eleven times, and you have never once seen it happen. Her hands were on it and your hands were empty and your eyes were on her face, and there was nothing in any of those four seconds that a person could have kept.
So next month it happens again, and you ask again, and something in you starts keeping a private tally that nobody else knows about.
That tally is what this is about. Not the daughter, and not the thing on the screen.

I have taught thee in the way of wisdom
There is a line where a father describes what he did for his child, and the verb is the one worth noticing.
I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. (Proverbs 4:11, King James Version)
Taught. Led. Not carried. Not done for.
Leading is a thing that happens while the other person walks. It is slower than carrying, it looks less impressive from the outside, and it is the only one of the two that leaves anything behind.
You are somebody God describes as teachable, and heaven has never once used the word carried where it meant to say led. Proverbs 4:11 has the teaching and the leading side by side, and the Holy Spirit is the one who insists on the slower verb when the faster one would have been easier.
Notice also the phrase in the way. Not about the way. In it. The teaching happened while the walking was happening, on the actual road, with both people moving.
That is not a lecture and it is not a rescue. It is a third thing, and most families have never been shown it.
You have been offered a third thing that is neither a lecture nor a rescue, and being taught in the way has never once required anybody to sit still and be talked at. The Holy Spirit is the one who teaches while a person's own feet are moving, and it is written that the leading happened in right paths rather than instead of them.
And there is one more thing in it. The father is not embarrassed to say he did this. There is no apology in the line, no suggestion that a grown child should have worked it out alone.
Teaching somebody is not an insult to them. It never was.
You were never disqualified from being taught by the number of your years, and asking to be shown has never once been an admission of anything. The Spirit of God is the one who honors the asking as much as the knowing, and Scripture puts the teaching into the mouth of a father with no apology attached to it.
Helped and taught are two different things
Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not change what happens at that table.
Being helped and being taught feel identical in the moment and are completely different a month later.
Being helped means the problem is gone. That is a real good and it should not be sniffed at, and there are days when it is exactly what a person needs. Nobody ever told her the difference, and a gap in the teaching is not a gap in anybody.
Being taught means the problem is gone and something remains. It costs about ninety seconds more and it is the only one of the two that changes anything.
You are entitled to ask for the more expensive one, and ninety extra seconds have never once been an unreasonable thing to ask of somebody who loves you. The Spirit of God is the one who values the slower path when the faster one would leave nothing, and Proverbs 4:11 puts led beside taught rather than instead of it.
And here is the part nobody has ever said out loud. She does it fast because fast is what she thinks helping looks like. She is not withholding anything. Nobody ever told her that the four seconds are the problem, because nobody ever told her there was a problem at all.
She would be dismayed to know about the tally. Genuinely dismayed, and probably a bit hurt, and then she would want to fix it, quickly, in four seconds, because that is her way.
You have never once been dealing with unkindness, and a fast pair of hands has never been the same thing as a closed one. The written word describes leading as something a loving person does on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a mother from misreading her own daughter.
Ask to be shown
Now the small thing, and it is one sentence long.
I am not going to hand over a speech to make, and I am not going to suggest a conversation about feelings. That is a much larger thing and it is not needed here, and it would turn a small practical fix into an occasion.
What is needed is one sentence, said at the moment her hand comes out.
Here it is. Do not do it, show me, and I will keep hold of it.
You are able to say one sentence at the moment a hand comes out, and eleven words have never once been an imposition on anybody at a kitchen table. Proverbs 4:11 has a father teaching in the way rather than instead of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a mother says something small and hard to her own daughter.
And keep hold of it. That part matters more than the words. If the thing leaves your hands, the lesson leaves with it, every single time, without fail.
So hold on, and let her talk, and be slow, and let it take a minute and a half.
You are keeping hold of what is yours while somebody talks, and being slow in front of your own child has never once cost a woman her dignity. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person through ninety seconds that used to take four, and it is written that the way of wisdom is walked rather than watched.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been keeping a private count at her own kitchen table.
You are somebody who can be taught and not only rescued, and four seconds of somebody else's hands have never once been a lesson anybody could have kept. I am not telling you your daughter is doing something wrong, because she is not, and I would say that to her face. Proverbs 4:11 says I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts a slower verb in a family's mouth.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have never once been in the presence of unkindness here, and a private tally kept for three years has never been evidence of anything except a question nobody knew to ask. The Spirit of God is the one who protects a mother from misreading a daughter who loves her, and the written word puts the teaching and the leading on the same road at the same time.
One sentence. Then keep hold of it.
Declare this over yourself
- Four seconds at my own kitchen table, you are a kindness done quickly and you were never a lesson, and you have no right to keep coming back every month. Proverbs 4:11 says I have taught thee in the way of wisdom, so by the Holy Spirit I ask to be shown and I keep hold of it, in the name of Jesus.
- Tally I have kept in private for three years, you have never once been evidence about my mind and you have no claim on me. The written word puts the teaching and the leading on the same road, and by the Spirit of God I say eleven plain words to my own daughter.
- Father, You teach in the way and You lead in right paths, and Your word never once says carried where it meant to say led. Your word makes me teachable at sixty-seven, so by Your Spirit I hold on to the thing and let it take as long as it takes.
