Is This A ScamGalatians 6:1

They Told Me Off For Nearly Falling For It

This message is for the woman whose family met her near miss with alarm and lectures, and who has since stopped telling them anything at all, which has left her more exposed and not less

You told them because you were shaken and you wanted somebody to know.

And what came back was alarm.

Not comfort. Not oh dear. Alarm, from three people at once, and then a series of instructions, and then somebody saying they were going to come round and look at everything.

And underneath all of it, unmistakably, the sentence nobody actually said. What if we had not caught this.

They love you. I want to say that plainly and early, because everything else here depends on it being true and it is true.

They were frightened. Frightened people give instructions, because instructions are what a person reaches for when they cannot do anything else with their hands.

But you were the one who had been shaken, and instead of being sat with, you were managed. And by the end of that evening you had somehow become the problem in the room.

So you stopped telling them things. That was about seven months ago. And you have not told them one thing since, including two things you would very much have liked a second opinion on.

That is where this piece is actually aimed. Not at them. At the seven months.

They Told Me Off For Nearly Falling For It

Restore such an one in the spirit of meekness

There is an instruction about how to come alongside somebody who has been caught out, and the manner is specified.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. (Galatians 6:1, King James Version)

Restore. Not correct. Not instruct. Restore, which is what you do with a thing that was already good and got damaged.

And the manner is named, which is unusual. In the spirit of meekness. Gently. Low. Without the helper standing above the helped.

You were meant to be restored gently by people who love you, and no alarm delivered in a kitchen has ever once been the manner Scripture named. Galatians 6:1 says restore such an one in the spirit of meekness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who names the manner and not only the action.

Now the last clause, which is the one nobody quotes and which does all the work. Considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

The person helping is told to remember, while they are helping, that they are equally capable of the same thing.

That single clause is what stops help from becoming a lecture, and it is exactly what was missing that evening.

You were owed a room where nobody stood above anybody, and no help has ever once been given properly by somebody who forgot they were the same. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a helper standing level with the person they are helping, and it is written that the considering of oneself belongs in the same sentence as the restoring.

And notice the word overtaken. It does not say if a man be foolish. It says overtaken, which is what happens when something faster catches somebody who was walking along.

There is no blame in the word at all.

You were overtaken and never once foolish, and no word in that verse has ever laid a fault at the feet of the person it caught. The Spirit of God is the one who chooses the word overtaken where a harsher one was available, and Scripture puts no blame in the description at all.

What the silence has cost

Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not undo seven months.

Count what the silence has bought. It has bought seven months without another evening like that one. That is real and it is worth something and I am not going to dismiss it.

Now count what it costs. Two things you would have liked a second pair of eyes on, and did not get. A daughter who thinks everything is fine. And a woman who is now handling all of this entirely on her own, which is the exact opposite of what everybody in that room wanted.

You are now carrying alone the very thing that frightened everybody, and no silence kept after a bad evening has ever once made anybody safer. The Spirit of God is the one who reads what a silence actually costs, and Galatians 6:1 puts the restoring in the plural where somebody has been left alone.

And here is the part that has not been said. They do not know they did it.

Every person in that kitchen went home believing they had been helpful. Not one of them has any idea that the evening produced seven months of silence, and if they knew, they would be appalled.

That is a gap in the teaching and it is not a gap in anybody's love. Nobody is ever taught how to receive that kind of news from somebody they love.

You have never once been dealing with people who meant to close you down, and no family has ever been taught how to hear a thing like that well. The written word names the manner because the manner does not come naturally, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a woman from misreading the people who love her.

Tell one calm person one small thing

Now the small thing, and it does not involve reopening that evening.

I am not going to suggest a conversation about how they handled it. That may be worth having one day and it would be a large one, and it is not what is needed to end seven months.

Tell one person one small thing this week, and choose the calmest person you know.

You are able to tell one calm person one small thing, and one ordinary sentence has never once been an invitation for anybody to take over. Galatians 6:1 names the manner as gentleness, and the Holy Spirit is the one present when a woman starts telling somebody something again.

Choose for temperament rather than for closeness. Not the one who loves you most. The one who does not react quickly. Everybody has one, and they are usually not the obvious person.

And choose something genuinely small. Not one of the two big ones. Something minor, from this week, that does not matter much.

Because what is being rebuilt is not information. It is the ordinary habit of mentioning things, and habits are rebuilt on small occasions rather than on important ones.

You are rebuilding a habit rather than reporting a problem, and one small thing mentioned in passing has never once obliged anybody to do anything about it. The Spirit of God is the one who restores a way of talking rather than only a fact, and it is written that the restoring is done gently rather than urgently.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has told nobody anything since March.

You are meant to be restored in the spirit of meekness, and no lecture delivered in alarm has ever once been the same thing as help. I am not telling you they were wrong to be frightened, because they were frightened for a reason and the reason was that they love you. Galatians 6:1 says restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who names the manner as well as the act.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have been carrying alone the very thing that frightened all of them, and no silence kept after a hard evening has ever once made a single person safer. The Spirit of God is the one who reads what a silence actually costs, and the written word chooses the word overtaken where a harsher one was available and lays no fault anywhere.

One calm person. One small thing. This week.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Evening my family met me with alarm, you were frightened love and you were never contempt, and you have no right to run another seven months. Galatians 6:1 says restore such an one in the spirit of meekness, so by the Holy Spirit I go on telling one calm person one small thing this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Silence that stopped me telling them anything, you have never once made me safer and you have no claim on my kitchen. The written word says overtaken and lays no fault at my feet, and by the Spirit of God I am less exposed for saying it than for keeping it.
  3. Father, You named the manner as well as the act and You told the helper to remember they are the same. Your word calls it restoring rather than correcting, so by Your Spirit I find the calm one and I begin again small.
