About a year ago you pressed something and a box came up.
You do not remember exactly what it said. You remember the shape of it. Words in the middle, something to press underneath, and a feeling in your chest that you had gone somewhere you were not supposed to be.
You got out of it. You are not sure how. You think you pressed the thing on the left.
And you have never gone back.
Not once in a year. That whole part of the screen has a rope across it now, the way a room in a house gets a rope across it, and you go around rather than through, and you have arranged the rest of what you do so that you never have to pass it.
Here is the thing I want to say first, before anything else. You did not do anything wrong that day. Nothing happened. Nothing broke. The proof of that is that a year has gone by and the thing in your hand still works exactly as it did.
But something did happen, and it happened in you rather than in the machine, and that is the part nobody has ever helped you with.

I will hold thy right hand
There is a verse where God describes taking somebody by the hand, and the detail I want you to notice is which hand it is.
For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. (Isaiah 41:13, King James Version)
The right hand. The working hand. The hand a man reaches out with.
Not an arm around the shoulder. Not a hand on the back. The hand he uses to do the thing, held at the moment he does it.
You are held in the hand you reach out with, and there has never once been a moment when the reaching happened on your own. Isaiah 41:13 has God taking hold of the working hand rather than the resting one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that real for a man in an armchair with something in his palm.
Notice the order in the verse, because it is not the order we expect. The hold comes first. Then the fear not. Then the help.
Most of us are waiting to stop being afraid before we reach out. The verse has the hand already held while the fear is still being spoken to.
You were being held on the day the box came up, and a year of going around that part of the screen has never once been evidence that you were on your own in it. The Holy Spirit is the one who was in the four seconds when a man did not recognize what was in front of him, and it is written that God says fear not while He is already holding on.
And there is one more thing in it. God says I will help thee. Not I will explain it to you. Help is a bigger word than explanation, and it covers the man who never does understand what that box was for.
That matters, because you may never find out what it said, and you do not need to.
You are helped by somebody who never once required you to understand the thing in order to be safe in it. It is written in Isaiah 41:13 that the help is promised alongside the holding, and the Spirit of God is the one who covers what a man was never taught.
What that box almost certainly was
Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance does nothing for a man who has a rope across part of his own screen.
Almost every box like that is one of three things, and none of the three is an accusation.
It is a question, asking whether a thing should happen, and asking because it will not do the thing without being told. That is the most common by far. Or it is a notice, saying that something has finished or started, and it goes away once it is acknowledged. Or it is a request, wanting permission it does not have, which will not be taken on its own, and that is exactly why the box exists at all.
What almost none of them are is a report of damage. Damage does not announce itself politely in the middle of a screen with a thing to press underneath. That shape of message is a machine being careful, not a machine being hurt.
You are looking back at a machine being careful with you, and a careful question has never once been the same thing as an accusation. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the accusation out of an ordinary sentence, and Scripture puts the fear not into the mouth of the one already holding the hand.
And the way out of one of those is nearly always the same small motion, repeated, until the screen is familiar again. It is the same way out of almost everything.
That is the only rule worth carrying, and it is worth more than any instruction naming a thing to press, because what is on that screen this year will have moved by the year after next.
You have a way back that has not changed in a year and is not going to, and one unfamiliar box has never once been able to shut a door behind a man. Isaiah 41:13 promises help rather than an explanation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a hand that has been kept in a pocket for twelve months.
What a year of going around costs
Now the part that matters more than the box. A rope across one part of a screen does not stay across one part. It spreads. First it is that one place, then it is anything that looks like that place, then it is a general habit of only doing the four things a man is sure of.
And the man does not notice it spreading, because every single step of it is sensible. Avoiding the place where something frightening happened is the most reasonable thing a person ever does.
But the cost is real and it is quiet. A year of small avoidances adds up to a smaller life in the hand, and then a smaller life outside the hand, because more and more of ordinary business now happens through that rectangle.
Nobody sat you down and told you what any of it meant. That is a fact about how these things arrived, and it is not a fact about you.
You were never taught this and you were never meant to work it out alone, and a gap in what a man was shown has never once been a gap in the man. The Spirit of God is the one who refuses to let a person read an absence of teaching as a verdict on themselves, and it is written that God says I will help thee to somebody who has not been given the words.
So the ten seconds I am going to ask you for are not about the box. They are about the rope.
You are able to take a rope down off a room in your own house, and one year of going around has never once made a place permanent. Isaiah 41:13 puts the holding on the working hand at the moment it works, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the ten seconds a man gives it.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has had a rope across part of his own screen since last October.
You are held by the hand that was under you the day that box appeared, and one message you did not understand has never once been a door locking behind you. I am not promising you that you will understand what it said, because you may not, and you do not need to. Isaiah 41:13 says I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a rope down.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have a helper who never once made understanding the price of being safe, and a year of going the long way around has never once been held against you anywhere. The written word puts help beside the holding rather than instead of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who goes into the corner first.
Ten seconds. Then come away.
Declare this over yourself
- Box that came up last October, you are a question and a notice and nothing else, and you were never an accusation against the man reading you. Isaiah 41:13 says I will hold thy right hand, Fear not, so by the Holy Spirit I go back and look for ten seconds, in the name of Jesus.
- Rope I put across that corner, you have never once been telling me the truth about what is behind you. The written word promises help rather than an explanation, and by the Spirit of God I take you down today and I walk through.
- Father, You take hold of the working hand and You say fear not while You are already holding it. Your word promises that You will help me, so by Your Spirit I put my hand out toward the place I have avoided for a year.
