A Warning Came Up And I Froze

Something came up and everything stopped.

It was the color that did it. Or the shape of it. Or the fact that it appeared without being asked for, right in the middle of what you were doing, and it had that particular tone.

You did not read it. That is the part worth noticing. You looked at it and your body decided what it was before your eyes had finished the first line.

And what your body decided was: this is about me, and I have done something.

So you froze. Then you put the thing down. Then you did not pick it up again for a while, and when you did, whatever it was had gone, and you never found out what it said.

I want to tell you something about those messages, and then something better about you.

Nearly every one of them is a machine talking about itself. Not about you. About it. What it has, what it does not have, what it would like, what it has just finished doing.

But nobody ever told you that, and so for years every one of them has landed in your chest as an accusation, which is a completely reasonable way to read a stern sentence that arrives out of nowhere. It is a gap in the teaching, and a gap in the teaching is not a gap in you.

God is greater than our heart

There is a verse about what to do when the thing accusing you is inside you, and the comparison it makes is enormous.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. (1 John 3:20, King James Version)

If our heart condemn us. The writer takes it as given that this happens. There is no suggestion that a well person would not experience it.

And the answer is not you are wrong to feel that. The answer is a size comparison. God is greater than that.

You are living under something bigger than the fastest verdict your own chest can produce, and no accusation arriving in a person's body has ever once been the largest thing in the room. 1 John 3:20 says God is greater than our heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that size difference real for somebody who froze at a screen this morning.

Then the second half, which people rush past. And knoweth all things.

That is not a threat. In this sentence it is a comfort, and it works like this. Your heart condemns you on partial information, because a heart is fast and does not have the file. God has the whole file and does not condemn.

You have been sentenced by something working from partial information, and a fast verdict has never once had more of the facts than the One who knows all things. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells the difference between a feeling arriving quickly and a judgment arriving truly, and it is written that He knoweth all things.

And notice what is not in the verse. There is no instruction to argue with your heart. No technique. No talking yourself round.

The verse just puts something bigger next to it, and lets the size do the work.

You were never required to win an argument with your own chest, and the size of God has never once depended on a person managing to feel differently first. The Spirit of God is the one who stands something larger beside a small loud thing, and Scripture offers a comparison rather than a technique.

What those messages are actually about

Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance does not thaw a person out.

A message on a screen is nearly always one of four things, and none of them is about you.

Something has finished. Something has started. Something has run out or is running low. Or something wants permission before it does the next bit.

That is the whole vocabulary. There is no fifth kind that says you have done wrong, because a machine has no way of knowing anything about a person's conduct and would not have the standing to mention it if it did.

You are looking at a machine's own inventory, and a note about how much of something is left has never once been a remark about the person holding it. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the accusation out of an ordinary sentence, and 1 John 3:20 puts something far larger next to the thing that condemns.

And here is the part that has never been said out loud to you. Those messages are written in a stern, flat voice because they are written by people who were thinking about being clear, not about being kind. Nobody in that process considered how a sentence would land in a front room at half past nine at night.

That tone was not aimed at you. It was not aimed at anybody. It is the absence of aiming.

You have taken a tone for an intention, and a flat sentence written by somebody thinking about something else has never once carried a judgment inside it. The written word says God is greater than the heart that condemns, and the Holy Spirit is the one who unhooks a person from a voice that was never speaking to them.

Read it out loud

Now the small thing, and it has two parts and takes about eight seconds.

I am not going to tell you what to press, and I am not going to name anything on that screen, because what is there now will have moved within two years and an instruction that names a thing becomes a lie in the meantime.

What I will give you is what to do with your mouth while your body is still frozen.

Read it out loud. Just the words. All the way to the end.

You are able to read a sentence out loud even while your chest is still going, and reading a thing aloud has never once made it worse for anybody. 1 John 3:20 puts the greater thing beside the condemning thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the eight seconds a person gives it.

Reading it out loud does something specific, and it is not bravery. The freeze happens faster than reading. Your mouth, going slowly, forces the whole sentence through, and the whole sentence is almost always duller than the first two words promised.

Then the second part, which is one question. Ask out loud: who is this about.

Almost every time, the answer arrives in a second and a half, and it is not you. It is about the machine. And the moment that lands, the freeze has nothing left to stand on.

You are asking one question that a machine cannot survive being asked, and four words in a person's own voice have never once been a foolish thing to say in their own house. The Spirit of God is the one who hands somebody the right question at the moment they need it, and it is written that the One who is greater knoweth all things.
