There are faces in there.
Your mother. The friend you had for fifty-one years. The dog, if we are being honest, and there is nothing foolish in that either.
Some of those faces exist in exactly one place now, and the place is a piece of glass and metal about the size of your hand, and you carry it around in a pocket.
So you do not touch anything near them.
You have worked out a route. There is a way you go to see them and a way you come back, and you follow it exactly, the way you would carry a full cup across a room. And anything on that screen that sits near them, anything you do not recognize, you go nowhere near.
That is not silly. I want to say that at the start, plainly, because somebody has probably laughed at it, and whoever laughed did not understand what was in the room.
What you are guarding is the only remaining thing of somebody you loved. Naturally you carry it carefully. And nobody ever told you what can actually be lost, which is a gap in the teaching and not a gap in you.
But you have been guarding it with a fear rather than with a plan, and a fear is exhausting and does not actually protect anything. So let us change that today, gently, and without moving a single thing.

A book of remembrance was written before him
There is a small verse about God keeping a record, and the reason for the record is the part I want you to sit with.
Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. (Malachi 3:16, King James Version)
People were talking to each other. Ordinary talk, in a hard season, one to another. Not a ceremony. Not a service. Conversation.
And somebody wrote it down. Not because it would be forgotten otherwise, but because it mattered enough to be kept.
You are living in a world where the ordinary talk of people who loved God was thought worth writing down, and no conversation has ever once been too small for heaven to have kept it. Malachi 3:16 says a book of remembrance was written before him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true for somebody holding the last picture of a face.
Now hold that against what you are carrying. The keeping of a life does not depend on you. There is a record that is not on any piece of glass, and it was made by somebody who does not lose things.
That does not make your pictures unimportant. It puts them in the right place. They are precious and they are not the last line of defense.
You have never once been the only thing standing between somebody you loved and being forgotten, and no piece of glass has ever carried that whole weight. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an impossible burden off a woman's shoulders without taking one thing away from what she loves, and it is written that the book was written before Him.
And notice the phrase before him. The record is kept in front of God, in His sight, not in a drawer somewhere. It is looked at.
Those faces are known where they cannot be lost.
You are keeping copies of something already kept perfectly, and a book written before God has never once been at risk from anything a person did or failed to do. The Spirit of God is the one who guards what is actually irreplaceable, and Scripture puts the remembering in His own sight rather than in anybody's pocket.
What can and cannot be lost
Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance does not help somebody carrying a full cup.
Only three things on any screen actually go one way, and they are worth learning once and holding forever. Deleting something with no other copy. Sending money. Giving somebody your details.
That is the list. That is genuinely the whole list.
Looking is not on it. Opening is not on it. Going somewhere unfamiliar and coming back is not on it. None of those can take a face away from you.
You are able to look at anything at all without losing it, and looking has never once been on the short list of things that go only one way. The Spirit of God is the one who hands a person the true size of a risk, and Malachi 3:16 shows a God who keeps records rather than mislays them.
And here is the thing that has never been said to you, because the people who could say it learned it so young they do not know it is a fact. Deleting a picture is not something that happens by brushing near it. It requires a person to say yes, usually twice, and it announces itself while it is asking.
That is how these things are built. Not by luck. On purpose, because whoever built them knew exactly what a picture is worth to somebody.
You have been treated with more care by the thing in your pocket than anybody ever explained to you, and a careful design has never once been something a person had to earn. The written word shows God recording what mattered on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman put a full cup down for a minute.
One face, on purpose
Now the small thing, and it involves nothing new at all.
I am not going to send you anywhere unfamiliar, and I am not going to name one thing on that screen, because what is there this year will have moved by the year after next and an instruction that names a thing turns into a lie.
What I am going to ask for is the route you already know, walked on purpose, in daylight, without the held breath.
Go and look at one face. Not all of them. One.
You are able to go and look at somebody you love without carrying the whole weight of keeping them, and one deliberate visit has never once put anything at risk. Malachi 3:16 has a God who keeps what matters in His own sight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who sits with a woman looking at her mother's face at ten in the morning.
And do it without the tension in your hands. That is the actual exercise. Not the looking. The looking without the fear standing behind you the whole time.
Because the fear has been charging you a fee every single time you go in there, and you have been paying it for years, and it has never once bought you any protection.
You are paying a toll to a fear that has never protected one single thing, and a fee like that has no right to stay on a woman's own front room. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person visit somebody they love with their shoulders down, and it is written that the remembering is done before God rather than by us.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman carrying a full cup across a room every day of her life.
You are keeping something God Himself keeps, and looking at a picture has never once been able to put a face beyond reach. I am not telling you the pictures do not matter, because they matter enormously and anybody who says otherwise is not paying attention. Malachi 3:16 says a book of remembrance was written before him, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes the held breath out of a woman going in to see her sister.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have never once been the last line of defense for somebody you loved, and a piece of glass in a pocket has never carried a weight that heavy. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps the record that cannot be lost, and the written word puts that keeping in His own sight rather than in anybody's hands.
One face. On purpose. Slowly.
Declare this over yourself
- Pictures on that screen, you are precious and you were never the last line of defense for anybody. Malachi 3:16 says a book of remembrance was written before him, so by the Holy Spirit I go in slowly today and I look at one face, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that has stood behind me every visit, you have never once protected one single picture and you have no right to charge me at the door. The written word says the record is kept before God, and by the Spirit of God I go in with my shoulders down.
- Father, You wrote them down in a book before You, and Your word says the ordinary talk of ordinary people was worth keeping. Your word holds them where nothing reaches, so by Your Spirit I sit with one face this morning and I take my time.
