I Do Not Touch Anything In Case I Ruin It

You use about four things on that phone.

You know which four. You can do those without thinking, and you do them every day, and everything else on it is a place you do not go.

And it is not that you are not curious. You have looked at the rest of it and wondered what it does. What you do not have is any confidence that if you went in there and something changed, you would be able to get back to where you started.

That is the real fear, and I want to name it accurately, because people usually name it wrong. It is not a fear of technology. It is a fear of a one way door. It is the fear of pressing something, watching the screen become unfamiliar, and having no way home.

And nobody has ever told you the one fact that would settle it, because the people who could tell you learned it so young that they do not know it is a fact.

So here it is, before anything else.

Almost nothing you can press is permanent. Almost everything goes back. And the way back is nearly always the same small motion, made over and over, until the screen looks like it did.

That is not encouragement. That is how the thing is built.

Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down

There is a line in the psalms about a man losing his footing, and the second half of it is where everything is.

Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. (Psalm 37:24, King James Version)

Notice that the falling is allowed to happen. The verse does not say he will not fall. It says he falls and is not finished by it, and the reason given is that there is a hand underneath.

Utterly cast down means past recovery. Gone. Nothing to be done about it. The promise is precisely that this does not happen, and not that stumbling never does.

You are held up in the falling, and there has never once been a stumble that put you past recovery. Psalm 37:24 grants the fall and denies the being cast down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that solid for somebody afraid to press a thing in their own front room.

Hold that beside the thing in your hand, because the parallel is exact and it is not a stretch.

For years now, one wrong press has been treated as though it were the unrecoverable kind. There is a hand under you in the large matters of your life, and there is a way back in the small ones, and in neither case does a stumble finish anybody.

You have a hand underneath you that was there before you ever picked that thing up, and no wrong press has ever once been able to reach past it. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a person in the four seconds when a screen goes unfamiliar, and Scripture puts the upholding in the middle of the fall rather than after it.

And there is one more word in the verse worth having. Upholdeth. Present tense, continuous, going on right now.

Not caught afterward. Held during.

You were being held while the screen was strange and you did not know it, and a bad four seconds has never once meant that somebody was on their own in them. It is written that the LORD upholdeth him with his hand, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in the part nobody sees.

What is actually reversible

Let me be concrete, because a general reassurance does not move anybody and I am not going to offer one.

Open something and the screen looks different: going back is one motion, and it can be repeated until things are recognizable again. Switch something on: the same switch turns it off. A thing appears that was not wanted: there is a way to make it go, and it is usually the same way every time.

What is not easily reversible is a short list, and it is worth knowing plainly. Deleting something there is no other copy of. Sending money. Giving somebody your details.

Those three are the doors that shut behind a person. That is the whole list.

You are able to look at almost anything without losing it, and looking has never once been on the list of things that go only one way. The Spirit of God is the one who hands somebody the true size of a risk, and Psalm 37:24 promises a hand under a man rather than a life without stumbles.

Everything else is looking, and looking has a way back.

So the rule is small enough to keep in your head. If it is not deleting, paying or telling, it can be looked at. And I am not going to tell you which thing to press, on purpose, because what is on that screen this year will have moved by the year after next, and an instruction that names a thing becomes a lie in about eighteen months.

The rule outlives the screen. That is why it is a rule and not a set of directions.

You have a rule now that is going to be true for the rest of your life, and no change on any screen has ever once been able to reach a rule that shape. The written word gives a promise about the falling rather than a set of instructions, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small true thing stay put in somebody's mind.

Four is not a small life

Now something about the four, before the assignment.

Those four things are not nothing. Four things done well every day is more than many people manage. Nobody here is going to suggest that a person who uses four things is failing at something.

The trouble is not the number. The trouble is why it is four, and the why is a fear rather than a choice, and a life arranged by a fear gets quietly smaller without anybody deciding it should.

You are living inside an arrangement that a fear made, and no arrangement built by a fear has ever once had the standing of a decision. The Spirit of God is the one who separates what a person chose from what a person flinched into, and it is written that the falling is granted and the ruin is refused.

And nobody ever told you what was reversible. That is a gap in the teaching, and a gap in the teaching is never a gap in the person.

Which means the assignment coming up is not about learning anything. It is about testing one fact.

You were never asked to understand it in order to be safe in it, and heaven has never once made comprehension the price of being upheld. Psalm 37:24 puts the hand under the man in the middle of the stumble, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody doing a small brave thing that nobody else would recognize as brave.
