They Are Folded In My Wallet

It is folded twice and it lives behind something.

You know exactly where it is. You could put your hand on it in the dark. It has been in that same pocket for about six years, and it has been through two wallets, and the fold has worn nearly through in one place.

And twice now, somebody has told you it is a foolish thing to do.

Both times they were being helpful. Both times they were probably right in the way they meant it. And both times, when you asked what you should do instead, the answer was something you could not use.

That is the part I want to sit with. Not the paper. The two conversations.

Because in both of them, a man doing the only thing that has ever worked for him was told to stop, and then handed nothing, and then left standing there with his own arrangement now labeled foolish.

So he kept it. And he kept it with a small permanent embarrassment attached, and the embarrassment is entirely the gift of those two conversations.

Nobody has ever offered you a working alternative. That is a gap in the teaching, and it is not a gap in you.

Bind them for a sign upon thine hand

There is an instruction about what to do with something you must not lose, and the direction it goes is toward the body rather than away from it.

And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. (Deuteronomy 6:8, King James Version)

Bind them upon thine hand. On the person. Carried. Where a hand goes, the thing goes.

The instruction is not to file it somewhere secure. It is not to memorize it and destroy the copy. It is to keep it physically close, on the body, in a place a person could reach without thinking.

You have been keeping something the way God once told people to keep what mattered most, and carrying a thing close has never once been the foolishness anybody named it. Deuteronomy 6:8 says bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who dignifies a habit a man has been quietly ashamed of.

Notice the second half, which is stranger and better. As frontlets between thine eyes. In view. In front of the face.

The instruction is not only to keep it close but to keep it where it can be seen. There is nothing hidden about it and nothing furtive.

You were never told to be secretive about what you carry, and no arrangement kept openly has ever once been the shameful kind. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes the furtiveness out of an ordinary habit, and it is written that the sign goes on the hand and between the eyes rather than into a locked box.

And there is one more thing worth having, which is the reason behind the whole passage. The instruction exists because these things are easy to lose, and the people receiving it were ordinary people with ordinary memories.

Nobody in that passage is being scolded for not simply remembering.

You were never expected to hold it all in your head, and no man has ever once been rebuked by God for writing something down. The Spirit of God is the one who takes it as given that a person will need help remembering, and Scripture answers that need with a physical object rather than with a lecture.

The two conversations

Now let me be concrete, because a general reassurance will not undo two conversations.

Consider what actually happened in each of them. Somebody named a risk. The risk is real, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

Then they stopped. They did not ask what you had tried. They did not ask what had failed. They did not offer a way that would work for a man who has been doing this for six years.

A warning without a workable alternative is not advice. It is only a warning, and a warning you cannot act on leaves a person exactly where they were, plus the shame.

You have been given warnings and never once been given a way, and a warning with nothing attached has never been the same thing as help. The Spirit of God is the one who tells the difference between being warned and being helped, and Deuteronomy 6:8 gives an instruction that a person could actually carry out.

And here is the second half, which is about that particular piece of paper. Your wallet is with you. That is the thing nobody weighs.

A thing kept on the body is not lying about in a house, is not in a drawer that anybody could open, and is not somewhere a person has to remember. It is where your hand is. That has real advantages, and they have never once been said out loud to you.

You are carrying something in the safest place a person actually has, and a thing kept on the body has never once been the careless option it was called. The written word puts the keeping on the hand and between the eyes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who names an advantage nobody has bothered to mention.

Take it out and put it back on purpose

Now the small thing, and it changes nothing about the arrangement.

I am not going to tell you to move it, and I am not going to name a better method, because I have not seen your life and anybody who prescribes a system for a life they have not seen is guessing at your expense.

Take the paper out, unfold it, refold it the way you choose, and put it back.

You are able to handle your own arrangement deliberately, and one minute at a kitchen table has never once cost a man anything at all. Deuteronomy 6:8 has the keeping done openly rather than furtively, and the Holy Spirit is the one present while a man does something small on purpose.

And do it in the daylight, at a table, not quickly and not privately. That is the whole exercise.

Because for six years that paper has been handled in a hurry and put away with a small flinch, and the flinch is what those two conversations installed. Handling it deliberately, in the open, on your own terms, is how a man takes back something that was labeled by somebody else.

You are taking back the labeling of your own arrangement, and one deliberate minute has never once been a foolish way for a man to spend his afternoon. The Spirit of God is the one who returns to a person the naming of their own life, and it is written that what mattered was bound on the hand and kept in plain view.
